Landscapes of the Four Seasons
Shitao (Zhu Ruoji)

Shitao frequently employed the album format to give full play to his imaginative use of brush techniques and compositional designs. In this series of eight leaves, datable stylistically to the last decade of the artist’s life, he explores the theme of landscape. Working in a free, wet-ink manner, Shitao reveals his independence from conventional models and methods in these highly personal images. As he observed in his Recorded Sayings on Painting of about 1700:

Even if my brush does not resemble brush and my ink does not resemble ink and my painting does not resemble painting, I make sure that my self is always present in my work.

Thạch Đào (Chu Nhược Cực)

Thạch Đào thường xuyên sử dụng những cuốn sổ tay để phát huy tối đa khả năng sáng tạo trong bút pháp và bố cục. Trong loạt tám tờ tranh này, có thể xác định niên đại dựa trên phong cách vào thập niên cuối đời của họa sĩ, ông khám phá chủ đề phong cảnh. Với lối vẽ phóng túng, sử dụng mực tươi, Thạch Đào thể hiện sự độc lập vượt khỏi các khuôn mẫu và phương pháp truyền thống trong những tác phẩm mang đậm dấu ấn cá nhân này. Như ông nhận xét trong “Những ghi chép về hội họa” vào khoảng 1700:

Dù bút của tôi không giống bút, mực của tôi không giống mực, và tranh của tôi không giống tranh, tôi luôn đảm bảo rằng bản thân tôi luôn hiện diện trong tác phẩm của mình.
