You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police. On all sides they are guarded by masses of armed men, cannons, aeroplanes, fortifications, and the like – they boast and vaunt themselves before the world, yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts; words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home – all the more powerful because forbidden – terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic. They make frantic efforts to bar our thoughts and words; they are afraid of the workings of the human mind. Cannons, airplanes, they can manufacture in large quantities; but how are they to quell the natural promptings of human nature, which after all these centuries of trial and progress has inherited a whole armoury of potent and indestructible knowledge?

Our friend Janet Yeow won the Mt. Whitney permits for 4 on May 31, 2021, and asked us to join her. At 14,505ft (4421m) Mt. Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous US. How could we refuse that?
For training in Arizona we hiked Humphreys Peak on Sunday May 16, and hiked Kendrick Peak on Saturday May 22. Then we drove to Lone Pine, California, camped at Onion Valley Campground on May 29, and hiked up to Gilbert Lake. The next day we stayed at Whitney Portal and hiked up about 1.5 miles. On the trail we met Chris, a Mt. Whitney ranger who gave us several good tips on hiking Mt. Whitney.
On the big day May 31 we started the hike at 1:20AM. Janet went ahead, and Lisa and Phat walked up slowly due to altitude sickness. We got near Consultation Lake at dawn. At the Trail Camp we filtered the water, hiked up the crazy 99 switchbacks, then continued to the top. Janet got to the top around 11AM. Lisa and Phat got to the top around 12:45PM. One of us (guess who) was so excited that she asked her insignificant other to take pictures of her both front and back holding the Mt. Whitney sign, to make sure no one would mistake her for somebody else. We took many pictures, signed the guest book, chatted with others, shared our lunches with strangers, and enjoyed the views all around.
We descended pretty fast, and enjoyed the views we missed when we came up in the dark. We reached the Whitney Portal around 9:30PM, hiking 22 miles in 20+ hours. Janet was there waiting for us. She finished 2 hours earlier, went back to the hotel and took a shower, and drove to the trailhead waiting for us. What a friend!
We came back to Janet’s hotel, took showers, had dinner, then said goodbye to Janet, and took turns to drive home through the night.
The trip was fun. The weather was perfect. The scenery was breathtaking beyond words. And the hikers were cheerful, generous, and helpful. A young man saw that Lisa was having some hard time breathing, and he offered to share his water. Many people could not make it to the top due to altitude sickness, but were happy to point us to the right trail as we looked a little lost. Places like this do some good to our souls.

Bạn tụi mình Janet Yeow may mắn có được giấy phép leo núi Whitney vào ngày 31/5/2021 cho 4 người, và mời tụi mình cùng đi. Whitney cao 14,505ft (4421m) là ngọn núi cao nhất trong 48 tiểu bang lục địa của Mỹ. Nghe đã ham rồi, làm sao từ chối được.
Để tập luyện cho chuyến đi, ở Arizona tụi mình leo núi Humphreys ngày Chủ Nhật 16/5, leo núi Kendrick ngày Thứ Bảy 22/5. Rồi tụi mình lái xe tới thành phố Lone Pine ở California, cắm trại ở Onion Valley Campground vào này 29/5, và leo lên tới hồ Gilbert ở đó. Ngày hôm sau tụi mình tới Whitney Portal và leo lên khoảng 1.5 dặm. Trên đường tụi mình gặp Chris, một nhân viên kiểm lâm ở đó, và anh chàng cho biết nhiều thông tin bổ ích cho chuyến leo núi này.
Vào ngày trọng đại 31/5 tụi mình khởi hành lúc 1:20 sáng. Janet đi lên trước, còn Trang và Phát do bị khó thở ở độ cao, nên đi chậm hơn. Hai đứa mình tới gần hồ Consultation lúc hừng sáng. Ở Trail Camp tụi mình lấy nước hồ, lọc vào bình, tiếp tục leo lên 99 đường đèo lên núi, rồi tiếp tục leo tới đỉnh. Janet lên tới đỉnh núi lúc 11 giờ sáng, Trang và Phát leo tới đỉnh núi lúc 12:45 trưa. Một đứa tụi mình (đoán thử đứa nào) quá phấn khích nên bảo đứa ngu kia chụp hình cả phía trước lẫn phía sau cầm tấm bảng núi Whitney, để khỏi bị lẫn lộn với người khác. Tụi mình chụp hình, ký tên lên danh sách những người leo tới đỉnh, tán dóc với mọi người, chia sẻ thức ăn với người lạ, thưởng thức phong cảnh xung quanh.
Hai đứa xuống núi nhanh, thấy được những cảnh quan trên đường đi mà lúc đi lên tối trời không thấy được. Tụi mình về tới Whitney Portal lúc 9:30 tối, sau khi đi bộ 22 dặm trong vòng hơn 20 giờ. Cô bạn Janet đã ngồi chờ sẵn. Janet xuống núi trước đó 2 giờ, đã về khách sạn tắm rửa xong, rồi quay lại chờ tụi mình. Đúng là bạn tốt!
Hai đứa mình lái xe theo Janet về khách sạn, tắm rửa, ăn tối, tạm biệt Janet, rồi thay nhau lái xe suốt đêm về nhà.
Chuyến đi thật thú vị. Thời tiết tuyệt vời. Phong cảnh kỳ diệu không lời nào tả xiết. Những người leo núi rất vui vẻ, hào phóng, và sẵn sàng giúp đỡ lẫn nhau. Một chàng trai trẻ thấy Trang khó thở, đem nước sớt bớt cho nàng. Nhiều người khác không thể lên tới đỉnh do say độ cao, cũng sẵn sàng chỉ đường khi tụi mình bị lạc. Đến những nơi chốn này hẳn làm người ta tốt hơn lên.
