Last year (Dec 2018) our 3 sisters came to USA to attend our father’s funeral. While waiting for the first week memorial ceremony, we took our 3 sisters to the Huntington Library, and then our all 5 siblings and families decided to visit Yosemite, Merced National Wildlife Refuge, and Monterey.
It was easier to just take them to a mall or Las Vegas to show the flashy American wealths. But here we wanted to show them how we Americans value our cultural heritage as well as national resources.
We first planned to go to the Getty Museum also, but it was close during Christmas time. We went to the Huntington Library to see all the beautiful gardens and museums, and stopped by the Library to see the wonderful collection of old books and manuscripts. We pointed out that the Huntington Library was donated by the Huntington family to the city for public enjoyment, and also a lot of people working there were volunteers.
We went to the Yosemite during the government shutdown, so it was a little inconvenient. But we all, especially the kids, were happy to play with snow in this great place. During the Civil War, President Lincoln signed the bill to preserve part of this park for future generations.
The next day we strolled the Merced National Wildlife Refuge for a few hours. Then we drove to Monterey to walk around the beach and had dinner. One of our sisters is a biologist who loved how Americans managed the wildlife refuges.
The short stay in America really impressed our sisters. It was not just materialistic and violent as anti-American propaganda often painted.
And now when I see millions of Hong Kongers coming down the street, my heart melts a little. The western values are way more valuable once you have a taste of them. I know why these Hong Kongers are willing to risk their lives.
