On Tea
Rikyū
The principles of Tea as taught by Rikyū are comprised in the four expressions Harmony, Reverence, Purity, Calm. Luxury and Ostentation were to be strenuously avoided.
Once a certain person came to Rikyū and asked him what were the mysteries of Tea. “You place the charcoal so that the water boils properly, and you make the tea to bring out the proper taste. You arrange the flowers as they appear when they are growing. In summer you suggest coolness and in winter coziness. There is no other secret,” replied the Master.
“Tea is naught but this. First you make the water boil, Then infuse the tea. Then you drink it properly. That is all you need to know.”
“All that I know already,” replied the other with an air of disgust. “Well, if there is anyone who knows it already, I shall be very pleased to become his pupil,” returned Rikyu.

Trà
Rikyū (Lợi Hưu)
Các nguyên tắc Trà do Rikyū truyền dạy bao gồm bốn biểu hiện Hoà, Kính, Tinh, Tịch. Phú quý và Phô trương phải được hết sức tránh xa.
Có lần một người đến gặp Rikyū và hỏi bí mật của Trà là gì. Vị Trà Sư trả lời: “Hãy lấy than đun sôi nước đúng cách, rồi pha trà để đạt được đúng hương vị. Hãy cắm hoa cho tự nhiên. Mùa hè hãy gợi sự mát mẻ, mùa đông gợi sự ấm áp. Không có bí mật nào khác.”
“Trà chỉ là thế này.
Trước tiên đun sôi nước,
Sau đó pha trà.
Rồi uống trà đúng cách.
Đó là tất cả những gì cần biết.”
“Tất cả những thứ đó tôi đều biết hết rồi”, người kia khinh khỉnh nói. “À, nếu ai mà biết hết những điều này, thì tôi sẵn sàng theo làm đệ tử”, Rikyū trả lời.
