No Water, No Moon
When the nun Chiyono studied Zen under Bukko of Engaku she was unable to attain the fruits of meditation for a long time.
At last one moonlit night she was carrying water in an old pail bound with bamboo. The bamboo broke and the bottom fell out of the pail, and at that moment Chiyono was set free!
In commemoration, she wrote a poem:
In this way and that I tried to save the old pail
Since the bamboo strip was weakening and about to break
Until at last the bottom fell out.
No more water in the pail!
No more moon in the water

Không Nước , Không Trăng
Ni cô Chiyono theo học theo học Thiền với Bukko của Engaku trong một thời gian dài , nhưng Chiyono không thể đạt được kết quả .
Sau cùng , một đêm trăng sáng , Chiyono gánh nước , một cái sô cũ có bao đan tre nan bọc bên ngoài . Bao tre hỏng , đáy sô rơi , và ngay giây phút đó , Chiyono giác ngộ !
Ðể kỷ niệm, Chiyono viết một bài thơ :
Bằng cách này ta đã cố gắng cứu chiếc sô cũ
Bởi vì bao nan đã yếu và gần hỏng
Cho đến lúc cuối cùng đáy vỡ rơi xuống.
Không còn nước trong sô!
Không còn trăng trong nước!
